Decoding Elon Musk and his peculiar habbits.
Elon Musk name is synonymous with innovation, ambition and sometimes with controversies. The enigmatic entrepreneur has left ever lasting mark on the various industries of technology, space exploration and transportation. Beyond his groundbreaking ventures Musk’s unconventional habits and tweets has always caught a public eye. We go through his journey from childhood to success taking a glimpse of his visionary mind.
The Early Years of Elon Musk:
Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. He is the oldest of three children to his parents. Mother Maye Musk, a model and a nutritionist and Father Errol Musk, an electromechanical engineer. He has three citizenship which includes : South Africa, Canada and United Staes.
Musk was genius from childhood as he has always been in books and computers. Often bullied by classmates and beaten up by class bullies as a little, timid until he grew strong enough to defend himself during his teens. One such incident told by the Elon was he had an argument with one of his classmates in the assembly and then he was beaten up by the boys and pushed him down the stairs and kicking him down the stairs. This was so bad that his brother recalls that he cannot recognize Elon’s face and called it was like ‘swollen ball of flesh’.
He never had seen their parents happy in their marriage as they always had fought in front the kids. He also had to attend the survival camp at the age of 12, where they used to provide small food portions and that the kids need to fight with each other in order to survive. As a result the elder boys would beat and snatch the food from the younger once. Even Elon Musk has been a prey at this camp.
Even in this weird situation his liking for computer coding didn’t fade. He developed a video game with self-learned coding called as Blaster at the age of 12 which he had sold to a magazine for $500. Musk left South Africa in 1988 to Canada as he refused to support apartheid through compulsory military duty and wanted to pursue higher prospects offered in Unites States.
Musk clearly had a toughest childhood and also faced financial crisis as his father didn’t support him after his graduation. They lived in 1 BHK apartment back in 1989.
The tweet reads, “I grew up in a lower, transitioning to upper, middle income situation, but did not have a happy childhood. Haven’t inherited anything ever from anyone, nor has anyone given me a large financial gift. My father created a small electrical/mechanical engineering company that was successful for 20 to 30 years, but it fell on hard times. He has been essentially bankrupt for about 25 years, requiring financial support from my brother and me.
“That said, he does deserve credit for teaching me the fundamentals of physics, engineering and construction, which is more valuable than money, but did not support me financially after high school in any meaningful way.
“Our condition of providing him financial support was that he not engage in bad behavior. Unfortunately, he nonetheless did. There are young children involved, so we continued to provide financial support for their well-being.”
One of the news also states that his father Errol Musk had been in a relationship with his own step daughter with whom he had two children. Errol had even agreed to this and stated as completely normal.
Elon Musk says when he found this he and his brother were creeped out and furious. He tried changing his father’s mindset with threats, rewards etc., but failed.
Elon Musk qualification
After his schooling in South Africa, Musk went to Canada at the age of 17 to attend Queen’s University and evade military service in South Africa. Musk got his Canadian citizenship the same year, partly because he thought it would be easier to get American citizenship that way. Musk moved to the United States in 1992 to study business and physics at the University of Pennsylvania. He held an undergraduate degree in economics before continuing on to get a second bachelor’s degree in physics. Musk went to Stanford University in California to hold a Ph.D. in energy physics after leaving Penn. But that Ph.D couldn’t make it to Elon Musk Degrees since he walked out of Stanford after only two days to start his first firm.
Elon Musk’s Zip2:
After completing his education at the University of Pennsylvania, Musk ventured into the world of entrepreneurship with Zip2, a web software company he co-founded with his brother, Kimbal Musk, in 1996. Musk’s initial attempts to secure funding for Zip2 were met with criticism from investors, who weren’t ready of backing an unproven startup in the already established field of online publishing.
Unstaoppable by rejections he kept pouring his own funds with his brother and consistently worked on the software day and night.
The company’s objective was to act as an online business directory similar to the yellow pages. It included maps and allowed companies to advertise themselves online.
Elon Musk while working at Zip2
While building Zip2, Elon was a ‘demanding’ manager who didn’t really believe in having a work-life balance. He worked day and night, without breaks, and expected others to follow it. When the employee engineers working on Zip2 left for the day, Musk would sometimes rewrite the code that they were working on. He had no realization that fixing the engineer’s code wouldn’t really make them like him.
To this he says, “I never wanted to be a CEO,” he told Isaacson in his book and added, “but I learned that you could not truly be the chief technology or product officer unless you were the CEO.”
Kimbal (Elon Musk’s brother) and Elon would often get into physical fights while working together at Zip2. And since the office didn’t have any closed offices, everyone would be watching the Musk brothers fight. Kimbal, in the book of Elon’s biography, also said that even though he loves his brother a lot, working with him was quite difficult.
Triumphs of Success
After struggling for funding when finally Zip2 was a succesfull venture and grabbed funding, Elon decided to sell it off and co founded X.com which eventually became Paypal and revolutionarised online payment system. This success of paypal led him in Silicon Valley and opened gates for further adventure.
SpaceX:
In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX with the audacious goal of reducing the cost of space travel and eventually enabling human colonization of Mars.
Tesla:
In 2004, Musk joined Tesla Motors (now Tesla, Inc.) as chairman of the board and later assumed the role of CEO. Under his leadership, Tesla has become synonymous with electric vehicles and sustainable energy solutions.
Neuralink and The boring Company:
Aiming at tackling some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. Neuralink, founded in 2016, is focused on developing brain-computer interface technology to enhance cognitive abilities and treat neurological disorders. The Boring Company, founded in 2016, aims to revolutionize transportation through the construction of underground tunnels for high-speed travel. He even innovated the hyper loop transportation system.

Extreme Work Ethic:
Musk is infamous for his grilling work schedule, often working over 80 hours per week across multiple companies. He has been known to sleep on the factory floor during crunch periods and expects similar dedication from his employees.
Never say NO to Elon Musk:
Musk sets a goal and is ambitous to achieve it come what may. His SpaceX co-founder Tom Mueller, who worked with Musk for over 20 years, said that he didn’t like when people told him something wasn’t possible. He said that he learnt to never say no to the billionaire and always tell him that he will try. Later, if things didn’t work out, he would explain the reason to Musk. If you were negative or thought something couldn’t be done, you were not invited to the next meeting. He just wanted people who would make things happen,” Mueller told Isaacson in his biography, reveals Business Insider.
Minimalist Lifestyle:
Despite his immense wealth, Musk maintains a relatively modest lifestyle, eschewing extravagant displays of wealth in favor of focusing on his work. He famously sold most of his possessions in 2020, stating that material possessions weigh you down.
Multitasking Mastery of Elon:
Musk’s ability to juggle multiple high-profile projects simultaneously is nothing short of remarkable. Whether he’s overseeing SpaceX’s latest rocket launch or unveiling a new Tesla vehicle, Musk’s multitasking prowess is a testament to his formidable organizational skills.
They say with great power comes greater responsibility. And that Elon Musk proves it with his hard work and make impossible things to possible!
